Down to Earth House

In a secluded cul-de sac, moments from the open spaces of Fleming Park, this captivating Californian retains its distinctive heritage appeal whilst being completely modernized and extended.

This pocket of Brunswick East was once a quarry. Ceasing operations and filled in during the early 1900s, we were fascinated to uncover a range of artefacts during excavation works which had been buried for a century.

The project itself had one key brief – retain the character of the original home whilst transforming it into an oasis of modern living.

The end result in conjuction with Steffen Welsch Architects however made it all worth while for us and our clients – a stunning juxtaposition of modern and contemporary providing an idyllic inner-urban family lifestyle.

Key features of the project include:

  • Rammed earth walls
  • Polished concrete slab with in floor hydronic heating
  • Corian and recycled timber benchtops
  • Concrete wrap-around kitchen island bench
  • Wormy Chestnut wall cladding in the bathrooms
  • Charred timber cladding external and internal
  • Iron Bark decking
  • Highlight frameless glass in-fills over lower timber windows
